Abstract:

Banana cultivation, predominantly led by Musa spp., represents a cornerstone of global agriculture, providing vital sustenance and economic opportunities for millions of people worldwide. This paper delves into the emerging challenges and opportunities in banana farming, aiming to shed light on the evolving landscape of this vital crop. The banana industry faces multifaceted challenges ranging from biotic and abiotic stresses to market dynamics and sustainability concerns. Pest and disease pressures, exemplified by the devastating Panama disease caused by Fusarium wilt, threaten global banana production. However, amidst these challenges lie promising opportunities for innovation and advancement. The advent of biotechnological tools offers novel avenues for breeding disease-resistant banana varieties, thereby bolstering resilience against prevalent pathogens. Furthermore, precision agriculture techniques, including remote sensing and data analytics, empower farmers to optimize resource utilization and mitigate environmental impacts. Market dynamics also present avenues for diversification and value addition in banana farming. The rising demand for organic and sustainably produced bananas provides an opportunity for farmers to adopt eco-friendly practices and cater to discerning consumer preferences.
