Abstract:

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the psychological well-being of individuals across various sectors has come under scrutiny. Among those significantly affected are farmers, whose livelihoods and daily routines have been subjected to unprecedented disruptions. Understanding the nuanced interplay between the psychological impact of COVID-19 and the diverse socio-economic characteristics of farmers is imperative for crafting effective support mechanisms tailored to their needs. Hence, the study was formulated to assess the important socioeconomic and psychological characteristics affecting the psychological conditions of farmers during COVID-19 pandemic. The study was conducted in Raichur district of Karnataka and Y.S.R. Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh with 180 farmers of which 90 were farmers with irrigated lands and other 90 with drylands. The Profile characteristics data were collected using structured schedule and Psychological impact was measured using a likert’s scale developed for the study. Data were analyzed with proper statistical techniques viz. frequency, percentage, chi-square test, correlation and regression. The result showed that when pooled correlation was considered the characteristics of age (0.364), farming experience (0.316), communication variable (0.360) and Social participation (0.237), showed significantly positive correlation while, risk orientation (-0.263) expressed significantly negative correlation at 1% level of significance respectively. Management orientation (-0.185) had negative correlation and significant at 5% level of significance. The results of multiple regression analysis showed that out of 14 independent variables, age (0.765), communication (0.576) at 1% level of significance and farming experience (0.460), risk orientation (-0.466) and management orientation (-0.345) at 5% level of significance made significant contribution to the psychological impact of farmers.
