Abstract:

Nutrition security encompasses food security, which encompasses nutrient content. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals have given participating organizations a deadline of 2030 to meet several ambitious targets, including Zero Hunger. India was on 94th position among the 107 countries ranked under “Serious” category as per the Global Hunger Index 2020. Though government of India and Tamil Nadu implemented dozens of food and nutrition oriented schemes still its reach towards healthy child population is at stake. As the State’s rural population vastly depended on agriculture for livelihood, policy and program intervention in agriculture may have direct effect on the life improvement.  Dietary diversity can serve as a proxy measure for nutritional adequacy. Agriculture and livestock has a big potential to impact on the underlying determinants of nutritional status of the population. Several research papers were reviewed to understand the current scenario of nutritional security in State and National level. Based on the review, some of the policy interventions like, Synergy between Agricultural Programmes and Nutrition Sensitive Interventions, Focus transformation from food Grain Security to Nutritional Security, Investment in Women’s Education, Particularly Higher Education, Integrated Nutrition Policy against Multi-Dimensional Indicators of Malnutrition, Dietary diversity in Nutritional Security etc. are believed to harness the potential. In order to achieve its zero hunger target set by the United Nations India may need to stop drafting new schemes but instead consider implementing them effectively.
