Abstract:

This study explores the socioeconomic determinants of nutritional status among low-income households in selected communities in Nsukka, Nigeria. Using a cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from respondents and analysed through logistic regression models. The study examined the impact of household income, educational attainment, and occupational type on nutritional status, while controlling for variables such as dietary practices, age, gender, and digital access. Results revealed that household income had a significant but negative association with nutritional status, suggesting that income increases within poor households do not automatically translate to better nutrition. Educational attainment and occupation were not statistically significant predictors. However, balanced diet practices and digital access emerged as strong and consistent positive determinants of nutritional outcomes. Age also showed a modest positive influence, while gender and education were largely insignificant across models. The findings suggest that behavioural and informational interventions may be more effective than economic status alone in addressing nutritional challenges. Based on the results, the study recommends community-based nutrition education, the expansion of digital health platforms, integration of nutrition goals into poverty alleviation programs, and targeted early nutrition education for younger populations. These combined efforts can improve food security and nutritional health in similar low-income settings.
