Determination of production and quality of maize using double-pass-dryer

Abstract:

The maize seed processing industry is rapidly evolving due to technological advancements and changing agricultural practices aimed at improving seed quality and processing efficiency. This study was conducted at Ganga Kaveri Seeds Pvt. Ltd. (GKPL), a leading Indian seed processing company providing end-to-end turnkey solutions for global seed companies for more than three decades. The study focused on the major unit operations involved in maize seed processing and the impact of mechanization on processing efficiency. The maize seed processing system includes cleaning, sorting, drying, shelling, processing, and packaging operations, which are carried out systematically to ensure high-quality seeds with improved germination and storage life. Among these operations, drying, processing, and packaging were identified as the most critical stages influencing seed quality. Modern mechanized processing methods were observed to reduce processing time, labor requirements, and post-harvest losses while improving operational efficiency and profitability compared to traditional methods. The study concludes that mechanization and advanced processing technologies play a vital role in enhancing the performance of the maize seed processing industry. However, further research is required to optimize energy consumption, maintain seed viability, and improve overall processing sustainability.
