My plate for the day: A visual tool for balanced diets and nutritional equity

Author(s):

Anamika K and Suma Divakar

Abstract:

The concept of "My Plate for the Day" is being promoted by national nutrition initiatives in India, including ICMR(2024), which introduced this model to encourage people to eat a balanced diet that consists of 8-10 food groups each day, the utmost objective of the concept is promoting diversity in food and to reduce the risk of developing micronutrient deficiencies, NCDs, and hidden hunger. It aligns with the POSHAN Abhiyaan’s (National Nutrition Mission) guidance on dietary diversification through daily consumption of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables and with other programs (e.g. mid-day meals) that provide support for gut health, immune function, and equity to safeguard vulnerable population groups. The "Eat Right" campaign launched by FSSAI across the country through schools and communities provides the visual representation of a healthy plate and encourages citizens to follow healthy practices to eat right. However, the promotion drives need wider streaming to reach larger sectors of our population.
